The AIMS Research Master’s and PhD Training Programme supports graduates as they transition from a taught/Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences into advanced, specialised research. The programme is also open to graduates from other institutions who wish to pursue postgraduate studies within the AIMS research ecosystem.
Affiliated with the AIMS Research Centre, students receive supervision and mentorship from AIMS Resident Researchers and partner-university academics. They join active research groups, participate in seminars and collaborative projects, and often contribute to resident academic programmes as Teaching Assistants.
A key feature of the programme is its strong emphasis on collaboration and mobility. Through both incoming and outgoing research exchange opportunities, students gain exposure to international research environments, global expertise, and diverse scientific cultures. These experiences enhance their skills, broaden their perspectives, and deepen their commitment to advancing scientific development on the African continent.
The AIMS Research Centre offers a vibrant and supportive environment for advanced scholarship. Located in a tranquil and well-resourced setting, the institution regularly hosts workshops, conferences, and scientific events that enrich the Master’s and PhD experiences and promote meaningful knowledge exchange.
Registration
As AIMS is not a degree-granting institution, all Master’s and PhD students are formally registered with one of AIMS’ founding partner universities:
- University of Cape Town (UCT)
- Stellenbosch University (SU)
- University of the Western Cape (UWC)
This dual affiliation enriches the academic experience and ensures alignment with international standards.
