The BSc (Honours) in Mathematics with a focus on Biomathematics is a one-year programme jointly offered by AIMS South Africa and Stellenbosch University, beginning each January. The programme responds to the growing need in fields such as molecular biology, bioinformatics, ecology, and biomedical science for researchers with strong mathematical and analytical skills. Students learn to develop and analyse mathematical models for real-world biological and medical challenges, including the spread of infectious diseases and the effects of environmental change. The curriculum covers mathematical modelling, computational and discrete methods, nonlinear dynamical systems in biology, and topics in biological and biomedical sciences, alongside a research project applying mathematical, computational, or statistical approaches to biological or environmental problems. Teaching is delivered by local and international researchers, and projects are co-supervised by experts in mathematical and biological sciences. Students spend the first half of the year at AIMS South Africa and the second half at Stellenbosch University.

Application process

Application information and forms are available on the Stellenbosch University Faculty of Science webpage for postgraduate programmes. South African students with a good BSc majoring in Mathematics, and (at least) some courses in a biological/biomedical field, or an equivalent qualification, can apply. For more information, please email the coordinator at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Cang Hui (chui@sun.ac.za).
