Our Responsibility to Learners: A Visit to Lavender Hill High
There is often much said about the poor quality of mathematics in schools. Too often, the conversation focuses on teachers or learners as the problem. But a bigger question remains: if we see the challenge, whose responsibility is it to strengthen the teaching and learning of mathematics?
On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Prof. Jonathan Jansen and Dr Sinobia Kenny visited Lavender Hill High School, led by its dedicated principal, Fuad Viljoen. Viljoen is deeply committed to improving mathematics education and creating real opportunities for learners.
The pair were invited to speak with learners about the importance of mathematics and the value of pursuing it seriously. They also spoke about what it means to be among the first in their families to explore fields like mathematics, science, and technology, a path that is both exciting and challenging.
What made the visit special was hearing directly from the learners. Two of them shared their appreciation for the opportunities offered by AIMSSEC, reflecting on their experiences at the University of the Western Cape during the Mega Maths Festival. Another learner, the top mathematics student at the school, was curious to learn more about AIMS South Africa and spoke passionately about his dream of becoming a computer scientist.
The responsibility for mathematics education does not rest solely on schools. Universities, organisations, and individuals all have a role to play in supporting teachers and creating opportunities for learners. AIMS South Africa looks forward to continuing to work with Prof. Jonathan Jansen, Fuad Viljoen, and the learners at Lavender Hill High School to open doors and nurture a love for mathematics.
