Mpfareleni Rejoyce Gavhi-Molefe

Dr Rejoyce Gavhi-Molefe is a Mathematical Scientist and Senior Manager of the House of Science at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa. Her expertise spans computational mathematics, public science communication, and gender and transformation in the African Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and higher education landscape.

She holds a PhD in Mathematics and an MPhil in Science and Technology Studies from Stellenbosch University and was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta, Canada.

As the AIMS South Africa House of Science Manager, she provides empowering leadership in public engagement, develops sustainable engagement frameworks, and leads innovative capacity-building and training programmes in science communication, public engagement, gender equality, and advancing women in STEM. These initiatives benefit AIMS students and alumni, as well as postgraduate students and lecturers from partner Historically Disadvantaged Universities (HDU’s).

She leads the Subdivision, Network, and Data Science Research Group at AIMS South Africa. Her research and teaching focus on subdivision methods for computer-aided geometric design, science communication, knowledge management, and gender-responsive transformation in the mathematical sciences, with a strong emphasis on societal impact.

Her professional achievements include serving on the South African National Advisory Council on Innovation (2018–2019), chairing the Siyakhula Festival (2024), and co-chairing the Mega Maths Festival (2025). She is Vice-President for the Southern Africa Region of the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA), a founder of MathAfrica, and co-founder of MentorUP (Canada) and the South African Women in Mathematical Sciences Association.
