80 Girls, One Celebration of Mathematics (#IMD2026)
On 13 and 14 March 2026, 80 Grade 4 girls from four primary schools on the Cape Flats came together to celebrate International Mathematics Day. Hosted by AIMSSEC, the event brought together learners from Levana Primary School, Lourier Primary School, Mholo Mhlaba School, and Encotsheni Primary School. Levana and Lourier learners met for a lively day of mathematical activities in Steenberg. At the same time, in Khayelitsha, Mholo Mhlaba and Encotsheni learners gathered to celebrate mathematics together.
For many of the girls, it was the first time they had met learners from another school. What stood out was how quickly they connected - working in teams, solving puzzles, and encouraging one another.
Each learner received an AIMSSEC T-shirt recognising them as future scientists and mathematicians. Transport and meals were provided so the girls could focus fully on the experience: learning, laughing, and getting to know their peers through mathematics.
Sibulele Magini, a school principal reflected on the day: “Thank you so much for Saturday; it was a fun-filled day of learning and sisterhood. The girls were engaged and seemed to have learnt a lot. Many thanks for making it happen. We appreciate the support.”
The learners’ excitement said it just as clearly. One girl summed up the day simply: “We love AIMS. I can’t wait to visit AIMS and do more maths!”
Our future scientists and mathematicians were left confident, curious, and capable of learning mathematics together.
