Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview before final selections are made. Our academic year kicks off in September and runs through until the end of June. Applications are open from January to March.

For the AI for Science stream we only have the September intake with applications open from January to March. For our Mathematical Sciences stream, we have a September intake, open January to March and a January intake (South African applicants) open August to October of the preceding year.

To be eligible to apply, you have to:

  • be a resident in Africa at the time of application*,
  • be a citizen of any country in Africa,
  • have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honours year by August (for the September intake) or December (for South African applicants in the January intake),
  • not have held a previous scholarship to study at an AIMS centre.

*The residency requirement is not applicable to students who are displaced by war.

Your undergraduate degree could be in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering or any other discipline with a strong computational and mathematical component. The requirement of having completed either a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an additional honours year is a requirement for enrolling as a Master’s degree student in South Africa. In the French LMD (licence-master-doctorat) system the equivalent is an M1 year.

The scholarship covers:

  • Flights to and from South Africa;
  • Airport transfers;
  • Medical insurance;
  • Tuition and research fees;
  • Stipend of R2,200 per month;
  • Accommodation on-site at AIMS (6 Melrose Road, Muizenberg);
  • Three meals a day at the AIMS canteen.

Please note the scholarship funds are managed by AIMS and are not paid into students’ bank accounts. Students receive stipends, paid directly into their South African bank accounts. AIMS processes and covers all other expenses directly.
