Research activity commenced at AIMS South Africa in 2003, mostly through a limited number of short-term research fellowships The AIMS South Africa Research Centre is a vibrant hub for mathematical innovation, collaboration, and discovery. Building on AIMS’s vision of transforming Africa through science, the Centre brings together leading researchers, emerging scholars, and industry partners to advance knowledge in the mathematical sciences and their applications to real-world challenges.
Research activity commenced at AIMS South Africa in 2003, mostly through a limited number of short-term research fellowships sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the Victor Rothschild Memorial Fund and the National Research Foundation. However, research at AIMS South Africa started off in earnest after the AIMS South Africa Research Centre was launched during May 2008 (following the purchase and refurbishment of two historical double-storey houses opposite the AIMS main building in Melrose Road, Muizenberg) and after a grant was secured from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) at the end of 2008.
By combining mathematical rigor with interdisciplinary approaches, we aim to tackle both foundational scientific questions and pressing challenges relevant to Africa and the global community.
The Centre provides a vibrant environment where researchers collaborate closely with postgraduate students, fostering mentorship, creativity, and innovation. With strong connections to local universities and research institutions, as well as global partners, we promote knowledge exchange, pan-African collaboration, and the growth of a connected, thriving research ecosystem.
