AIMSSEC works differently
We are grounded in community. Our programmes are rooted in township and rural schools, shaped by the realities of these communities rather than imposed from above. We begin by listening to and understanding each school’s constraints, strengths, and priorities, and then design responsively. Learning context is the foundation of our work.

Teacher development is central to our mission. We deliver SACE-endorsed professional learning courses, each running across 3-4 months, designed to elevate thinking. We offer a structured pathway of seven mathematics courses that support teachers’ growth from foundational mathematical thinking and cutting-edge pedagogies to advanced education technologies, research methodologies and action research. Working primarily with teachers in rural schools, we aim to reach 320 teachers annually.

We bring township school communities into AIMS South Africa. Working alongside postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, professors, and visiting scholars, township teachers and learners experience spaces of high expectation, recognition, and inclusion. These include algorithmic thinking with a free online platform called TurtleSttich. Traditional hierarchies are deliberately collapsed. High school and primary school leaders, teachers and learners, and researchers learn together, reflecting our belief that meaningful mathematical learning thrives in community.

Our research contributes to new theory in the academy by foregrounding locally rooted mathematical knowledge and pedagogies. We are advancing research across three core areas: rural teacher development, computational thinking as a vehicle to mathematical thinking, and AI in education.
